A Boat Trip to South Koster and North Koster

The Koster Islands consist of two main islands: South Koster and North Koster. With Selin Charter’s Koster boats, you can experience the islands from the sea and choose the route that suits your day best. Some visitors prefer a calm island day on South Koster with Naturum Kosterhavet, beaches and cycling. Others want to discover North Koster’s cliffs, viewpoints and more rugged archipelago character. If you want to see even more of Kosterhavet, you can choose to continue on the same boat trip towards a seal safari and a visit to Ursholmen Lighthouse.

Travelling to the Koster Islands by boat is part of the experience. Already on the way out, you can feel the sea air, watch islands and skerries pass by and see how the Bohuslän coastline opens up towards Kosterhavet National Park.

The Best Things to Do on South Koster

Naturum Kosterhavet is one of the best places to start your day on South Koster. Here you can learn more about Kosterhavet National Park, life below the surface, wildlife, marine habitats and why the area is one of Sweden’s most unique marine environments.

This is especially suitable for families, nature lovers and visitors who want to understand the place before continuing across the island. After a visit to Naturum, the boat trip, swimming, hiking or cycling on South Koster becomes even more meaningful, as you get a clearer understanding of the nature and sea surrounding you.

South Koster is one of the best choices if you want to combine a boat trip with swimming. Kilesand is one of the Koster Islands’ most popular beaches and is especially suitable for families looking for an accessible beach environment. Rörvik is a good alternative if you want to combine swimming with snorkelling, walking and proximity to Kosterhavet’s marine environments.

On South Koster, you can easily shape the day according to the weather and your preferred pace: start with the boat trip, go ashore, walk or cycle to a beach and finish with coffee, food or a quiet moment by the sea.

South Koster is especially well suited for exploring by bike. The island is largely car-free and has small roads that make it easy to move between harbours, beaches, viewpoints, cafés and natural areas. A good starting point is Ekenäs, where you are close to Naturum Kosterhavet and can easily continue towards Långagärde, Kilesand, Rörvik, Valfjäll, Brevik or Kyrkosund.

Cycling on South Koster is ideal if you want to see more of the island without doing a long hike. It is also a good option for families, as you can adapt the distance to your energy, the weather and your interests.

South Koster is also suitable for shorter hikes. If you want an easy walk near the boat, the Brown Trail / Rörvik Loop is a good option. It is approximately 2.5 kilometres long and works well for families, shorter day visits and anyone who wants to experience South Koster’s nature without setting out on a longer hike.

If you want a slightly longer but still accessible hike, the Blue Trail on South Koster is a good choice. It is approximately 3.4 kilometres long and takes you through deciduous woodland, coastal meadows, cliffs and seaside environments.

If you want to see more of South Koster, there are several places around which you can build your day. Valfjäll is one of the island’s best viewpoints, while Brevik, Kyrkosund and Långagärde offer a clearer sense of South Koster’s variation, with harbour environments, small roads, nature, sea views and local island character.

If you want to do a longer hike, the route Kyrkosund – Långagärde – Rörvik may be a good option. It is approximately 13.4 kilometres long and is suitable if you want to combine a boat trip to South Koster with a longer day hike through several of the island’s most characteristic environments.

North Koster is the right choice if you want to experience the more rugged, open and dramatic side of the Koster Islands. Here you will find cliffs, heather moorland, shingle fields, small paths, viewpoints and a stronger sense of the outer archipelago.

Unlike South Koster, which is more accessible and family-friendly, North Koster is especially suitable if you want to hike, take photographs, experience sea-facing viewpoints and feel close to the outer archipelago of Kosterhavet.

The Best Things to Do on North Koster

One of the best things to do on North Koster is to hike towards the lighthouses and viewpoints. The hike “The Lighthouses on North Koster” is approximately 3.2 kilometres long and is suitable if you want a short but memorable route with a strong feeling of sea, history and outer archipelago. From the lighthouse area, you get views over the Koster Islands, Kosterhavet National Park and the surrounding archipelago.

This is a good choice if you arrive by boat and want to fit in a clear nature experience without committing to a full-day hike.

The White Trail on North Koster is approximately 5.5 kilometres long and is ideal if you want to experience North Koster’s nature at a comfortable pace. The trail passes through a mix of paths, small roads, woodland, open land and sea-facing environments.

This is a good option for day visitors who want to combine a boat trip to North Koster with an easier hike where nature is the focus.

The Orange Trail on North Koster is approximately 5.6 kilometres long and is suitable if you want a moderately long hike with a clear archipelago feeling. Along the route, you can experience cliffs, bays, heathland and views over Kosterhavet. The trail is short enough to work as a day activity, but varied enough to give a strong sense of North Koster’s landscape.

This is a good choice for couples, smaller groups, nature lovers and visitors who want to combine boat travel, hiking and scenic views.

If you want to experience more of North Koster, the Ålviken – Valnäs – Duvnäs trail is a strong option. It is approximately 9 kilometres long and is suitable if you want a more extensive hike through North Koster’s varied and rugged archipelago landscape. The trail passes through bays, cliffs, open land, woodland and coastal sections.

This route is best suited for visitors who want a more active day and have plenty of time before the boat returns. Always plan your hike according to the current return timetable.

North Koster is one of the best choices on the Koster Islands if you want to photograph landscapes, sea, cliffs and open views. Here you get more of the rugged outer archipelago feeling, with wind, granite, heather, sea horizon and quiet paths.

For nature photographers, couples and visitors looking for a more stripped-back experience, North Koster can often feel more memorable than South Koster. The focus is less on services and more on landscape, hiking and the presence of the sea.
